Diamond Hands Collection
The term ‘Diamond Hands’ comes from the online forums of Reddit, where it is used to describe a strategy implemented in the stock market. To ‘Diamond Hand’ is to hold onto a particular asset, or in this case, a stock, regardless of market volatility.
During and after the January 2021 run-up (that is known within the $GME forums as ‘The Sneeze’), investors playfully adopted the moniker ‘ape’ to describe themselves. This name served to toy with the mainstream financial media, who had labeled them as, “dumb money”; which was ironic, as many of the individuals holding the stock were actually very educated and well researched professionals.
In short, this is how the ‘Diamond-Handed Ape’ evolved and this series of paintings is meant to embody the moments, feelings and tribulations of this saga. At the crossroads of technology and accountability, the ape stands diamond-handed and unmoving. The game stops here.
