The Flow Series: Acrylic Flow Fish, Jellyfish, and Serpents
The Flow Series captures the movement of flowing creatures like fish, serpents, and jellyfish by using fluid-acrylic paint and a series of experimental techniques that I call ‘flow painting’.
The process begins with a canvas covered in wet paint, usually white or black. A string is then dipped into a color mixture and laid strategically onto the wet canvas. Pulling the string through the paint at different angles, adding additional drips and smearing them, all work together to create interesting shapes and textures. After seeing what wants to emerge, final touches such as eyes and lips bring these wonderful creatures to life.
The best part of this method of painting is that it lets the subject emerge as a flowing and natural result of the process, versus the deliberateness and meticulousness required for a realism piece. The element of surprise and lack of hard planning makes these pieces some of the most fun to create. Each creature is completely unique and unreproducible, creating a truly one of a kind artwork that is as strange as it is unforgeable.
